Norwich Castle 1101 38th Charter Night

Last night saw the 38th Charter Night for Norwich Castle 1101.  It was held at the City Club in Norwich and was well attended.

I do not know how I am keeping such a svelte like figure this year as the food was excellent and the drink flowed.   Patrick Cutter (Chairman) had not made too much effort in organising an interesting speaker – his slightly older twin brother.   Philip Cutter though was very amusing; I do feel sorry for their Dad!

The night saw a very special presentation of a Diamond pin badge.  In the photographs above you can just about make out Andrew Kerry (Area Membership Officer) awarding David Barnes this special badge for introducing 10 new members into Table.  What a fantastic achievement.

I must apologise to Patrick, I could not resist but your Netball Runners up Trophy looks good on my Study shelf!  Look forward to seeing you at the next Area event in February to return it!

Night out with Sheringham & Cromer

The other Thursday night saw an interesting but somewhat cold wander around the streets of Norwich with an elite selection of the membership from Sheringham & Cromer!

The walk was conducted by the “man in black”, who insisted that he was from the long distant past, the only thing I can say for certain was that he had a strong attraction to the ladies undergarments shop in London Street!

There were a few surprises during the night including Mr Fisher buying a round!

Again another good Table night, for further details about the organised walks please visit www.ghostwalksnorwich.co.uk

Now last Thursday turned out to be a night I enjoyed greatly and the bonus was my wife has enjoyed it since!

I met up with the Aylsham Tablers on their visit to J&D Papworth Farms butchers unit in North Walsham. I must say I learnt a lot on this evening from how to carve up a carcase, to the correct pressure needed to turn a chipolata into a proper sausage. We rounded the evening off with a taste of our efforts at Kellys.

I had great fun and was made to feel very welcome by the guys from Aylsham.  Thank you for the invite and thank you to the chaps from Papworths.

Please follow the link (click on Aylsham on the Tables page) to Aylsham web site for what will be an interesting video of the night.

28th July – Saw myself and the Area Vice Chairman, Mark Older swinging from the trees at Sheringham with the guys from North Walsham.

I cannot say that this was my most comfortable night but Mark looked in his element.  I think the 40ft zip line nearly finished me off!

Although the activity was outside my comfort zone the fellowship was excellent, thank you North Walsham for inviting us along.

Last Wednesday night Harleston were graced with my presence.  We spent the evening at Dunston Hall hacking at some golf balls at the driving range.  This was most useful as the course pro was on hand to tell us where we were going wrong.  The main feedback for one or two of the guys was they had pick up a club rather than a pint.  This warm up was followed by a quick, well fairly quick putting competition which saw their Chairman, Joel going backwards and forwards like a woman trying to decide which was the best offer on washing powder! This said his last put was something quite gifted.

The evening on the course finished with a nearest the pin  I was happy to keep mine out of the water although I did not have to worry as ten feet past the tee would have been quite respectable!  Richard (I have never lifted a club) Moss was the only one to land it on the green, well done.

As with most table evenings we ended with some food and a nice pint.  A very pleasant evening out, thank you.

Hunstanton Business Meeting

Tuesday the 12th saw one of the oddest things I have witnessed for a while –   the induction of     Ed(wina) Napolitano into Hunstanton and District 615.  I have never seen such a well groomed chest rug in all my life!

This set the scene for the rest of the Business Meeting held at the Manor House at Heacham.  The meeting started with the presentation of a very useful “key holder” to myself in gratitude for Area 6’s acknowledgment of Hunstantons ability to win a sporting event and still not be awarded the trophy.

It was great to see a well structure meeting which maintained a good pace (I must take note for the AGM), with the minutes of the previous meetings being read with such passion and enthusiasm.   It is a very rare talent to keep such a well-manicured record of a Tables activities.

Hunstanton have a very full year ahead of them with some fantastic Table nights and some excellent fundraising opportunities such as the Coast2Coast Challenge, Fireworks and Christmas Swim. Please take a look:  www.hunstantonroundtable.com

The meal was excellent as was the venue, although we could have done with a few more chips!

I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and wish to thank the guys for their hospitality.  I look forward to using my “key holder” in the near future.

“You have bled with Wallace, now bleed with me.”

Last night saw the unleashed fury of the otherwise restrained North Walsham Tablers!

I showed up to the venue on Plumstead Road, Norwich expecting another “typical” Table night.  In many ways it was – the friendship, the banter, the beer! But rolling into the car park there was something else in the air; was it some form of tension, a level of excitement, fear? No it was a realisation that I had shown up to a paintballing night in an orange polo shirt and white trainers (school boy error!).  The stupidity of my attire sank in further as more guys showed up in their own camouflage fatigues. This was going to hurt.

We soon got suited and booted and set off for the first sortie.  Again I quickly realised that a large fern does not give you much protection.  Steep learning curve!

Unlike other table nights it was not spent chatting and drinking but crouching behind trees, keeping low in trenches and trying not to breath.

Following the pain we retired to Zaks on Mousehold were we met up with those “that could not make the earlier start”.  The food was excellent along with the company.

I look forward to the next time.

Tuesday night saw another Dereham meeting.  This time it was held at the Gresham School practice nets.  As it can be seen from the photos this was much needed practice for the forthcoming match against Elsing Cricket Club in a couple of weeks!  Fortunately I will not be able to attend.  I was one of the first in to batting practise and spent most of my time swatting flies against the bowling machine.  Soon it was my time to face the fury of my fellow Dereham Tablers most of which I felt safe standing in front of.  With only two bowls left I felt I had avoided any damage.  It was just my luck Alex “Flintoff” Jenkins was one of these and tossed an absolute b~RS!~rd into my left thigh. nuCt!  The practice was followed by a few pints at the Kings Head in Holt and a warm buffet.

Funny

Last Thursday the Vice Chair (Mark Older) and I joined Norwich Castle at the “Laugh in the Park” in Norwich.  There were three “comedians” and a compere (or was that compare).  It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening in good company with good beer.  The funniest thing all night was the cost of the cheese to go with the £5 burger! Over the last couple of years Castle have seen a resurgence in membership and now have a younger presence in the Area.   Good Luck David Barnes with your sponsored walk!

Down to Business!

I attended the first formal meeting of the year for the Dereham & District Table on Tuesday night (OK I am a Dereham Tabler).

It was well attended by the Dereham guys with good humour and high spirits.  The Chairman, Terence Burleigh highlighted his goals for the year. Mark Older the Community Support Officer presented requests for donations from the charity account and highlighted that Santa’s Sleigh had failed its MOT and needed a serious overhaul.  It looks set to be a “cracking” year in Dereham.

The venue was the Kings Head in Dereham and I must say that the Nelson’s Revenge was particularly good!

Typical!

Tubing!

Spent an excellent night last night with Stalham & District 1079 in Norwich. I will not mention the Tubing! Spent the evening playing killer pool at the Trowse Ski Slope and then had a very nice meal at the Eagle on Newmarket Road (apart from parking a mile away).

Although things did not quite go to plan it turned out to be a ”Typical” Table night of good fellowship and friendship . It was great to see that Table is strong on the East of the Area.

Excellent start to the year Lee (Chairman), I get the feeling last night is going to cost you and I look forward to a repeat visit to Trowse later in the year!
